Two millionth pallet milestone for Pallet-Track’s Northern hub

A Wolverhampton logistics company’s northern hub has reached its two millionth pallet milestone less than five years after it opened its doors.

Pallet-Track’s strategically-located 70,000 sq. ft hub in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan hit the two million tally on Wednesday, March 30.

The site, which is the company’s first standalone hub development in the north of England, handled 998 pallets on its opening night on August 7, 2017.

The location for the hub was selected because of its close proximity to the UK’s motorway network and initially engaged with 30 of Pallet-Track’s shareholder members.

Coupled with its central hub in Wolverhampton and its southern hub in Welwyn Garden City, the development was designed to reduce long hauls and empty running, the wasted mileage created when trucks arrive back at their original destination without a return payload.

Tommy Morrison, Pallet-Track’s northern hub night operations manager, said:

“The hub is a key part of our regional operations and supports the ongoing success of our network. To see two million pallets pass through is a fantastic achievement and one our team should be proud of.

Running the hub helps operators reduce fuel costs and the environmental impact, as well as cutting congestion on the UK’s roads caused by longer hauls – and all at a time when there is increased awareness of the need to improve air quality across the UK.”

Caroline Green, chief executive of Pallet-Track, added:

“Two million pallets through our northern hub in less than five years really is a milestone to celebrate.

When the hub opened its doors, we couldn’t have predicted the enormous hike in fuel prices and lack of availability of vehicles which have become ever-growing issues over recent months.

While we may not have known it at the time, a facility which reduces environmental impact and shares loads by design couldn’t be more vital as we face up to the ongoing challenges in our industry.”
